Behind the cut, two pictures of me with my new glasses and, more importantly to most, SteelyKid:

Front, a little blurry because I moved:

I like the way they look, but I'm still waiting to see if I can get used to the weight (my old glasses were very thin titanium wire) and the width of the temples (which obstruct my vision).

SteelyKid is also modeling one of her new soft long-sleeved shirts for fall, one that I would wear and could buy for myself, but which she got out of the boys' section. Of course.

The little girls section of the store always freaks me out.

Babies 'R Us is now a total loss for clothes--either they're uncomfortable or they're so completely over-the-top gendered that there's just no point.

I think I'm getting used to the glasses, but I'm wearing contacts today because I need them adjusted.

My new shades have earpieces like those, and huge Jackie O lenses ... I think next time, no.

I used to get the Yound Lady's clothes from the boys' department all the time at that age. The girl stuff was just too girly, and uncomfortable because of it: scratchy lace, ruffly gathers with bare elastic on the underside, and so on.

I'm much less fussy about the look of my shades, so those are very ordinary frames.

I refuse to put SteelyKid in dresses in the winter unless it's a holiday--do I want to be getting her into _tights_ on a daily basis? I think not. And I try to avoid buying her pink, though she will wear gift-pink clothes, for the same reason that all of her toys are now female unless it can't be avoided (Appa, for instance, is canonically male).

Oh, that nice soft fuzzy texture of shirt? It's some kind of fleecy product that I sent my niecephews last winter (via LL Bean). And... yeah, come to think, I don't think I've ever seen it for adults.

It's actually neither fleece nor fuzzy, but it's _soft_, unlike what Babies 'R Us had in Carter's clothes for girls in her size, which was all this very stiff-feeling cotton--most disappointing, because until now Carter's had been reliable, well-made, reasonably sized, and with at least some non-froofy styles. Now BRUs has that, things that run small or are flimsy (Gerber's, Miniwear), or things that are more expensive than I want to pay for something that will only be worn a few months (everything else).

This came from Target and is, I think, Cherokee.

Ooh, nice frames. I got some with wide sides like that last year, and the sides didn't take so much getting used to, but the narrow lenses did (since I'd had round lenses previously). A data point.

SteelyKid is as cute as ever! I think this is the very first non-smiley photo I've seen of her.

I agree with you on the kids' clothes. I have a niece and it's impossible it seems sometimes, to buy anything for her that isn't in Barbie colors. I really detest Barbie colors. And they don't look very good on her, either.

Heh - hyooj SteelyKid! When did that happen? She was still a baby, last photo I saw...

Also, cool frames. I too have gone from skinny titanium to wide sides; you get used to it surprisingly quickly, and I find I like the change. Partly just for change's sake, I guess (I liked going the other way too, from heavy glass to absurdly light plastic-lenses-and-titanium), but also for the actual difference, the assertiveness, I-am-a-man-who-wears-glasses as against my-glasses-are-invisible-even-to-me...

I was just surprised that glasses that dark and angular looked nice on me; usually I wear ones without corners and that are a thin brown. But ones that actually fit my face haven't been in style for a while. I wonder if I should just buy some frames now and stock up for lean years ahead . . .

I love the way Steelykid's expression in the second picture--it's like she's thinking "When you're done with that, you'll do something I like, right?"

And those are some stylish glasses. I stepped on mine a couple night ago (apparently, it doesn't only happen in movies) and while I managed to reassemble them, I can't make them sit level on my nose. Time for new.
