Jones, Dogsbody (SPOILERS)

Over on my booklog, I posted in non-spoiler terms about Diana Wynne Jones's Dogsbody. Behind the spoiler-protection of the cut here, though, I'd like to ask people who liked the ending to explain it to me.

The thematic thing I referenced in the booklog post, which keeps coming to mind when I think about what the ending might be trying to convey, is "We live in a fallen world." Which I suppose needn't be Christian, and maybe it's my problem being unable to fit it into the not-obviously-Christian mythology of the book; but it still doesn't feel right to me.
