Windows 7 question

In Windows XP, I could arrange my start menu so that if I named a frequently-used program something with a unique starting letter, I could hit the Windows key to bring up the start menu, and then hit that unique starting letter to open the program.

Can I do this in Windows 7 with a setting change or separate program? The default is that typing while the start menu is open creates a search, which is annoying and reduces the number of things I can do with keyboard only.
