Welcome to Night Vale re-listen, episodes 5-6
Episode 5: The Shape in Grove Park (stream, transcript)

General Comments

Cecil gets philosophic. I like this one for the character development, even if I continue to find Michael Sandero's presence upsetting.

Recurring items
* Bloodstone circles (they exist)
* Michael Sandero (grows a second head which his mother likes better)
* Old Woman Josie and the angels (see Rita Hayworth)

Oddities
* none

Don't remember
* Night Vale Green Market Co-Op

Carlos
* When Cecil ponders the moon, he says, "I went to ask Carlos, but he hasn’t been seen much since that treacherous Telly’s vile haircut."

Interns
* Leland, vaporized by the Shape
* (interns are traditionally buried in the break room)

The Weather
* Dan Bern - Jerusalem. Whiny dude with acoustic guitar who keeps pushing his whiny voice at the end of every line until I want to pop my eardrums.

Miscellaneous
* "Friends, listeners; there’s a real tarantula problem here in Night Vale. Many residents have called in to report that illiteracy, unwanted pregnancy, and violent crime are on the rise in the tarantula communities. " -- hee!
* Cecil goes solipsistic, which normally I don't have any patience for but it's characterization; he ends convinced of his existence but of nothing else: "We do not have answers. I am not certain that we even have questions. I have chosen to not be certain of anything at all."
* Also, he has a first name now!

Episode 6: The Drawbridge (stream, transcript)

General Comments

I had literally no recollection of this episode when I saw the title. This is probably for a good reason: the title refers to a conceit that's already been done, a water-related construction project in the desert, and there's no strong through plot. There are some good plot-less bits, though, so it's an okay episode.

Recurring items
* Steve Carlsberg (I think Cecil did not actually sic the Sherriff's Secret Police on him, because he was taken a couple of days ago and I see no reason to believe a show spans days rather than a day)
* Night Vale Daily Journal (special new Imagination Edition)
* Dog Park
* Mayor Pamela Winchell (first appearance!)
* The invisible, constantly moving Clock Tower

Oddities
* No, there's another *gate construction: "Drawbridgegate."

Don't remember
* Dropped the pledge drive idea? It's been more than a year since this episode and I don't remember it coming up again.

Carlos
* none

Interns
* none

The Weather
* Dio - Aye. Rap that is, I'm guessing, by the .nl domain name of the band, mostly in Dutch. Despite that, still NSFW.

Miscellaneous
* Memory loss and potential doubles. After the roving power loss, people "felt that perhaps they were different people — their memories and identities were the same as always, but suddenly felt like costumes that didn’t fit exactly. As though it all were actually brand new to them. As though they had been switched out with someone who was exactly like them."
* Numbers stations are real.
* No E-Z Pass in the Southwest. I'm guessing that's just a mistake by two guys in New York rather than subtle worldbuilding.
* The first time Cecil ends with what's coming next on the show: "Stay tuned next for Zydeco: Note By Note — a special two-hour verbal description of what zydeco music sounds like." I think sometime after this, this changes to stuff that doesn't involve voices.
* Love the proverb: "Lost? Confused? Lacking direction? Need to find a purpose in your life?"
